Diplomatic Detour 🕊️

Diplomatic Detour 🕊️ Markets spent the week walking a tightrope. AI enthusiasm, rising oil prices, geopolitical headlines, and shifting investor sentiment all pulled in different directions, leaving markets searching for balance rather than certainty.

Three Things That Mattered:

  • ⚖️ AI optimism collided with geopolitical uncertainty, creating another week of rotating market leadership.
  • 🛢️ Oil remained the market’s emotional barometer as Middle East tensions kept investors on edge.
  • 🌎 Google showed that powering AI’s future may depend just as much on clean energy as computing power.

US MARKETS: AI Couldn’t Do It Alone

Wall Street navigated a busy week of shifting headlines and changing market moods. Monday started strong as AI stocks helped lift the S&P 500 and Nasdaq higher. Tuesday brought some caution, with concerns over high AI valuations weighing on technology shares. Wednesday saw markets react to Middle East tensions, with oil prices rising before sentiment improved. Thursday delivered a rebound as oil eased and tech stocks recovered. Overall, the week highlighted the market’s balancing act between AI optimism, geopolitical risks, and the occasional surprise along the way.

What does it mean for you?

Markets are balancing multiple storylines at once. AI remains a powerful market driver, but geopolitical risks and shifting economic signals can quickly change the mood. The takeaway: even strong trends do not move in a straight line.

TSX: Canada Finds Its Balance

Canada’s stock market had a week of finding its own rhythm, rather than simply following Wall Street’s playlist. Monday saw the TSX slip as materials dragged, while tech strength lifted U.S. markets. Tuesday brought a shift toward Canada’s “older economy” favourites, with energy and financials gaining as oil prices rose. Wednesday was the rough patch, as Middle East tensions pushed markets lower and oil higher. Thursday brought relief as oil eased and stocks bounced back. Overall, Bay Street showed its character: less tech-driven, more tied to commodities, banks, and global headlines.

What does this mean for you?

The week highlighted Canada’s unique market mix, where energy, financials, and materials often play a bigger role than technology. The TSX’s moves showed how commodities, oil prices, and global events can quickly shape sentiment across Bay Street.

Game of Gains Has Entered the Market!

We are running a Kickstarter campaign to offer our Game of Gains boardgame to the public for a limited time.

Money decisions are not just about numbers. They are about confidence, fear, trust, timing, and emotion.

That is why Finliti created Game of Gains — a financial literacy game that helps people understand how they behave when markets change and decisions feel uncertain.

Players face market events, debate strategies, manage surprises, and learn how emotions like hesitation, regret, FOMO, and overconfidence can shape financial choices.

No real money. No shame. No jargon Olympics.

Just a safe, social, memorable way to learn.

CRYPTO: Bitcoin Waited For The Next Signal

Bitcoin slipped toward US $62,000 as geopolitical tensions and shifting market conditions weighed on crypto sentiment. Ethereum and several major altcoins also moved lower, while ETF inflows provided some support. Traders are keeping an eye on inflation, interest rates, and global events as the crypto market finds its footing. For now, Bitcoin appeared to be taking a cautious pause until rebounding a little at the end of the week, proving once again that even digital coins can have a few nervous moments when the world gets complicated.

What does this mean for you?

The latest crypto moves highlight how digital assets remain sensitive to global events, interest rates, and market sentiment. Bitcoin’s resilience around key levels shows continued attention from participants -- for now, while volatility reflects uncertainty across broader financial markets.

EMERGING MARKETS: China Couldn’t Lift Everyone

Emerging-market stocks took a hit recently as Middle East tensions flared and investors continued rotating away from AI-heavy winners. Oil prices climbed, risk appetite cooled, and the MSCI emerging-market index slipped, though Chinese shares enjoyed a surprise boost as bargain hunters stepped in. Currencies told a mixed story, with some gaining while oil importers felt the pressure. Meanwhile, Indonesia and Turkey faced possible market-status concerns. In short, emerging markets are juggling geopolitics, valuations, and a bit of investor mood swings.

What does this mean for you?

The latest moves show emerging markets are being shaped by a mix of geopolitics, currencies, AI trends, and local economic conditions. China’s rebound highlights shifting sentiment, while markets facing policy concerns remain under pressure.

COMMODITIES: The Strait Still Matters

Oil prices eased slightly late in the week but were still headed for a strong weekly gain as tensions between the U.S. and Iran kept markets on edge. While traders found some relief that energy infrastructure has largely avoided direct attacks, concerns over rising inflation and its impact on fuel demand tempered the rally. The conflict has also delayed the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route. For now, oil markets remain caught between geopolitical jitters and economic reality.

What does this mean for you?

Higher oil prices may support energy producers, but persistent geopolitical tensions and inflation risks could fuel broader market volatility. Much will depend on whether supply disruptions intensify or economic concerns begin to outweigh geopolitical fears.

MEME STOCKS: When Politics Moves Prices

President Donald Trump gave Dell (DELL) an unlikely White House boost Monday, urging Americans to "go out and buy a Dell computer" during an Oval Office event marking the launch of the Trump Accounts program. Dell shares jumped more than 7% after the remarks. Trump praised CEO Michael Dell and his wife, Susan, for their US $6 billion pledge to the initiative, while disclosures released last week also showed Trump actively traded Dell stock in 2025. It wasn't a classic meme-stock rally, but it had all the ingredients of a viral, headline-grabbing market moment.

What does this mean for you?

Political endorsements can spark short-term share-price moves, but lasting returns still depend on Dell's business fundamentals. It also raises questions about market influence, investor sentiment and the optics of public officials promoting individual companies.

MELLOW MARKETS: Pepsi Chose Margins Over Volume

PepsiCo (PEP) says the second half of the year could be a bit pricier, with rising commodity, packaging, and logistics costs squeezing margins. To keep shoppers interested, the company is cutting prices on some snacks, ramping up marketing, and rolling out healthier options like lower-sugar and high-protein products. While North American food sales dipped, strong international demand helped lift overall revenue above expectations. PepsiCo kept its full-year outlook unchanged, betting that smart cost management and evolving consumer tastes will help keep the fizz in its business.

What does this mean for you?

PepsiCo’s results highlight a balancing act: protecting margins while keeping value-conscious consumers engaged. Stable guidance signals confidence, but rising costs and softer North American demand suggest execution on pricing, innovation, and cost control will remain key to future performance.

ESG: AI Still Needs More Electricity

Google’s (GOOG) latest environmental report shows AI’s appetite for electricity is growing fast, but so are the company’s clean energy efforts. Despite a 37% jump in power demand, Google cut operational emissions by 2% in 2025 through record clean energy purchases and more efficient data centers. It is also investing in nuclear, geothermal, and other advanced energy sources. The catch? Supply chain emissions rose 25%, a reminder that while operational progress is possible, making AI’s full footprint greener is still very much a work in progress.

What does this mean for you?

The report suggests companies with strong clean energy strategies may be better positioned to support AI growth while managing climate risks. At the same time, rising supply chain emissions and grid constraints could increase costs, regulatory scrutiny, and execution risks across the sector.

🧭 Insurance Corner: The Underwriting Lens — Why Insurers Ask So Many Questions 🔍📋

Applying for insurance can sometimes feel like filling out a very detailed medical or financial quiz. The reason is underwriting, the process insurers use to evaluate risk before deciding coverage terms. Think of it as the behind-the-scenes detective work that helps insurers understand what they are agreeing to protect.

Underwriting looks at information that helps estimate the likelihood and potential cost of a future claim. Depending on the type of insurance, this may include details about a property, vehicle, business operations, health history, or other risk factors. The goal is not to predict the future perfectly, but to create a clearer picture of the risk being insured.

Insurers use underwriting to group similar risks, determine appropriate coverage conditions, and build policies that reflect different situations. Two people may have similar insurance needs but receive different terms because their risk profiles are not exactly the same.

🧩 Use Case: Emma and Liam both purchase home insurance, but Emma's home has a newer roof, updated wiring, and a modern security system. Liam's older home has aging features that may require more maintenance. Their coverage needs may look similar, but underwriting helps insurers understand why the risks could differ.

Simple memory trick: Underwriting is the risk review before the coverage view.

Jargon Word of the Week

Put-call parity is a simple rule that shows how the prices of two types of options, calls and puts, are connected. A call option gives you the right to buy something later at a set price, while a put option gives you the right to sell it. The rule explains that option prices, the stock price, and interest rates should all line up in a certain way. If they don’t, traders could potentially make money with little or no risk. In a fair market, these prices should stay balanced.

In a sentence, please!

“Thanks to put-call parity, the price of a put option can be determined if you know the price of a call option with the same strike price and expiry date, along with the stock price and interest rate.”
